The Science of Feeder Sizing (The 10-15% Rule)

The 10-15% Body Weight Rule

For most growing captive colubrids and boids (such as Ball Pythons and Corn Snakes), ideal prey weight is between 10% and 15% of the reptile's total body weight. Feeding under 10% may cause slow growth or hunger agitation, while prey over 15-20% risks dangerous regurgitation and gastric stress.

The Body Girth Matching Rule

The circumference of the frozen-thawed mouse should be equal to or slightly larger (1.0x to 1.25x) than the widest part of your snake's mid-body. A noticeable, gentle swelling should be visible after feeding, which should completely subside within 48 to 72 hours.

Calcium-to-Phosphorus Ratio

Adult rodents feature fully ossified skeletal systems, providing an optimal Ca:P ratio of 1.5:1 to 2:1. Pinkies and early fuzzies have soft cartilage, which is gentle on juvenile digestive tracts but lower in calcium—feed frequently to match rapid hatchling development.
